"Black Painting 1969" by Datuk Ibrahim Hussein

It’s a Malaysian flag which has been painted black, along with a red line and white circle.

Tun Razak questioned: 'Ibrahim, is that a real flag? Why did you deface our national flag?',

Ib Hussein explained :

black - the darkness represents an eclipse the country was going through

red - the twilight that comes after the eclipse and darkness

white circle - symbolises a new energy and a rebirth

He added, “To me, May 13th is not a national tragedy, it is a human tragedy; and could happen anywhere in the world if man chose to live like that.” Eloquence won the day and he was allowed to exhibit the painting in the Dewan Tunku Canselor, Universiti Malaya. There was also a condition that 'May 13th' was not to be sold or be taken out of the country.

“In future, regardless of which party rules or whoever becomes prime minister and ministers, the strengthening of the nation’s institutions will ensure that there is no corruption, abuse of power and theft of money and public property and, should it happen, [the perpetrators] will not escape legal action. This is what the government of the day holds to, respecting and appreciating the will of the people that the Rule of Law is upheld,” Dr Mahathir said.

XTRA is remembering Datuk Ibrahim Hussein (1936 – 2009) , our very first customer since 1995, who purchased a pair of Mies Van Der Rohe from our humble 1000 sq ft showroom in City Square, now Double Tree. We have since moved to The Gardens Mall, Mid Valley.

A great man, (the first Malaysian artist invited to participate in the Venice Biennale), who is also down to earth.

We are honoured and humbled to have furnished his residences.
