Ethereum breaks past US$3,000 to quadruple in value in 2021

SINGAPORE (May 3): Cryptocurrency ether broke past US$3,000 on Monday to set a new record high in a dazzling rally that has outshone the bigger bitcoin, as investors bet that ether will be of ever greater use in a decentralised future financial system.

Ether, the token transacted on the ethereum blockchain, rose 3% on the Bitstamp exchange to US$3,051.99 by lunchtime in Asia. It is up more than 300% for the year so far, easily outpacing a 95% rise in the more popular bitcoin.

In part, the big rally is a catch-up to late 2020 gains in bitcoin, said James Quinn, managing director at Q9 Capital, a Hong Kong cryptocurrency private wealth manager.

It also reflects improvements to the ethereum blockchain, he said, and a growing shift towards "DeFi", or decentralised finance, which refers to transactions outside traditional banking for which the ethereum blockchain is a crucial platform.

"At first, the rally was really led by bitcoin because as a lot of the institutional investors came into the space, that would be their natural first port of call," Quinn said.

"But as the rally has matured over the last six months, you have DeFi and a lot of DeFi is built on ethereum."

The launch of ether exchange-traded funds in Canada and surging demand for ether wallets to transact non-fungible tokens such as digital art have also pushed up the price.

The ether/bitcoin cross rate has soared more than 100% this year and hit a 2.5-year high on Sunday, pointing to a degree of rotation into the second-biggest cryptocurrency as investors diversify their exposure.

"Surging DeFi volumes continue to push ethereum prices higher as investors gain confidence in crypto and see ethereum as a safe second-place asset," said Jehan Chu, managing partner at Hong Kong blockchain venture capital firm Kenetic Capital.

Illustrating the momentum for such new transactions, Bloomberg reported last week that the European Investment Bank plans on issuing a digital bond over the Ethereum blockchain, while JP Morgan plans a managed bitcoin fund.

Bitcoin, the world's biggest crypto asset with more than US$1 trillion in market capitalisation, regained the US$50,000 mark last week and hovered around US$58,000 on Monday, up about 3% but well below its record high at US$64,895.22.

The US dollar was broadly steady.

Ethereum dan Ether

Ethereum adalah rangkaian kontrak pintar, manakala Ether pula adalah token atau mata wang yang diperlukan untuk mendorong kontrak tersebut. Melalui penggunaan sistem teknologi dan nama yang baharu, kebanyakannya pengumpul krypto (termasuk LUNO) biasa untuk menyebut kedua-dua istilah tersebut hanya sebagai "Ethereum" dengan menggunakan kod mata wang ETH.

Sepintas lalu Ethereum

Ethereum adalah satu platform sumber terbuka, berdasarkan teknologi blockchain, yang membolehkan pembangunan perisian bagi membina kontrak pintar dan juga aplikasi terdesentralisasi.

Walaupun Bitcoin adalah mata wang (simpanan kekayaan dan alat pembayaran utama), maka Ethereum juga adalah salah satu platform perisian selain Bitcoin.

Seperti mana Bitcoin mampu untuk menyimpan senarai baki dan transaksi pada blok rantaiannya (blockchain) yang tersendiri, blok rantaian Ethereum juga direka untuk menyimpan pelbagai jenis data. Data ini dapat diakses dan digunakan oleh program komputer yang berjalan di dalam blok rantaian Ethereum. Program-program ini dipanggil dengan istilah aplikasi terdesentralisasi, atau dapps.

Ethereum pertama kali disebut pada tahun 2013 di dalam kertas putih oleh Vitalik Buterin, pemaju yang mengusahakan Bitcoin pada ketika itu. Buterin menyakini bahawa Bitcoin haruslah digunapakai disesuaikan mengikut keadaan semasa. Beliau juga memberikan pendapat bahawa Bitcoin harus pergi melangkah dengan lebih jauh lagi daripada hanya sekadar untuk menjadi simpanan kekayaan. Selain itu,  Bitcoin juga memerlukan ciri-ciri seperti kontrak pintar untuk menentukan transaksi urusan secara automatik hanya melalui sistem pembayaran yang kebiasaannya dilakukan, misalannya. Justeru itu, idea yang bernas untuk merealisasikan projek ini tidak beliau ambil untuk penambahbaikan bagi Bitcoin akan tetapi ianya telah digunapakai, oleh Buterin bagi mencipta Ethereum sekitar tahun 2014. Ini adalah salah satu faktor dan sebab utama Ethereum telah diciptakan dan ianya bukan persaingan kepada Bitcoin.

Recently we’ve seen a renewed interest in Ethereum from our customers. Like Bitcoin, Ethereum (or ETH, the underlying currency) has soared to an all-new record high over the past few weeks as more and more people warm up to the possibilities Ethereum provides.

At LUNO, we support Bitcoin, the dominant cryptocurrency, and Ethereum, the second largest.

Ethereum and Ether

People often use the terms Ethereum and Ether interchangeably. However, they are different.

Ethereum is the smart contract network, whereas Ether is the token or currency needed to fuel it. With many new technologies and names, most people (including LUNO) call both "Ethereum" and use the currency code ETH.

What are smart contracts? / LUNO Learning Portal : 

Ethereum aims to make everyday life more efficient and cost effective by automating everyday processes and removing middlemen from the systems we use. This could be to the legal system, the financial system, computer systems or more.

With Bitcoin, both the network and the currency are called "Bitcoin."

Ethereum at a glance

Ethereum is an open-source platform, based on blockchain technology, allowing software developers to build smart contracts and decentralised applications.

Whereas Bitcoin is a currency (a store of wealth and a means of payment), Ethereum is a software platform.

What is Ethereum? / LUNO Learning Portal :

Where Bitcoin stores a list of balances and transactions on its blockchain, the Ethereum blockchain is designed to store different types of data. This data can be accessed and used by computer programs running on the Ethereum blockchain. These programs are called decentralized apps, or dapps.

Ethereum can be bought, sold, traded and stored on platforms like Luno in the same way as Bitcoin.The creators of Ethereum never intended it to be a currency like Bitcoin. Supply consistency is not guaranteed.

Where did Ethereum come from? / Luno Learning Portal :

Ethereum was first mentioned in 2013 in a whitepaper by Vitalik Buterin, a developer who was working on Bitcoin at the time. Buterin believed that Bitcoin should be made more customisable. He believed Bitcoin should go a step further than simply being a store of wealth and that it needed smart contract features to determine automatically when payments should occur, for example. This project was not taken up for Bitcoin, therefore Buterin created Ethereum in 2014 for this purpose.

What is a smart contract?

A smart contract is computer code that promotes the exchange of value; such as money, content, equity shares or even property rights.

These contracts automatically execute when their terms are met. They handle enforcement, management, performance and payment, like a self-operating computer program.

Ethereum and the future

Ethereum is full of possibilities. It may have the power to disrupt hundreds of industries, with new ideas emerging all the time.

Recently, the United Nations announced it would use Ethereum to distribute funds to refugees from the World Food Program. Use of the blockchain cuts out the middlemen. It's cheap and efficient. Using Ethereum, companies don't need to be controlled by one person or group.

Known as a decentralised application, or ‘dapp’, next-generation developers are creating ground-breaking apps with the ability to replace everything from companies and services to governments.

Although this all sounds amazing, be cautious as you consider Ethereum and its possibilities. There's a lot of hype around.

Apakah itu Ethereum?

Ethereum adalah merupakan sejenis matawang digital yang mempunyai ciri-ciri yang serupa dan menyamai Bitcoin. Selain itu, ia juga terkandung dalam rangkaian awam atau satu blok rantaian yang dikenali sebagai blockchain dengan ciri-ciri matawang digitalnya (cryptocurrency) yang tersendiri dan disebut nama ringkasan sebagai Ether. Ethereum ini telah diciptakan oleh Vitalik Buterin pada tahun 2014. Tujuan Ethereum diciptakan adalah untuk dijadikan sebagai satu platform agar sebuah kontrak pintar dapat dibina dan dijalankan serta beroperasi secara dalam talian.

Oleh itu, bagi para pembangun industri internet di seluruh dunia akan dapat membina dan juga menjalankan aplikasi terdesentralisasi hanya melalui sistem di blok rantaian Ethereum yang tersendiri. Tujuannya adalah untuk meningkatkan kapasiti dan keupayaan dalam industri kewangan, penyimpanan maklumat peribadi, pemerintahan dan pelbagai lagi.

Kesimpulannya, semua perkara tersebut yang berkaitan akan dapat diaplikasikan melalui transaksi operasi penggunaan di blok rantaian (blockchain) yang telah pun dikenalpasti mempunyai ciri-ciri sifat operasi transaksi yang telus serta berkesan.

What is Ethereum?
