A deputy imam in Permatang Pauh, Penang, found a slab of meat, believed to be pork, at an entrance of the Cherok Tok Kun Atas mosque.
Saad Arop, 78, made the discovery this morning at 5.30am when he went to the mosque in Machang Bubok on the mainland for Subuh prayers.
Penang crime investigation department chief senior assistant commissioner Mazlan Kesah said Saad suspected that the slab of meat was pork and lodged a police report at about 7.20am.
Mazlan said there are no closed circuit television cameras (CCTVs) in the area but it is believed that the suspect used the main road, which is less than 10m from the mosque, and tossed the meat when he got to the mosque's entrance.
"This is the first time this has happened at the mosque.
"We have carried out investigations at the site and taken the complainant's statement. The meat has been sent to the Bukit Minyak Veterinary department to be tested and verified," Mazlan said in a statement today.
Mazlan said the incident is being investigated under Section 295 of the Penal Code for defiling a place of worship with intent to insult a religion.
Three weeks ago, the Assumption Church in George Town, Penang, was attacked with two Molotov cocktails.
The small firebombs were thrown over the fence into the church compound during the early morning hours on January 27, but only burned some grass and partially blackened the cement where the shrine bearing a statue of the Virgin Mary was located.
Since the incident, police in Penang have been patrolling around churches and mosques to prevent such incidents.
On February 8, the Bukit Tengah police station on the mainland was also attacked early in the morning when firecrackers were tossed over the fence into the compound, causing damage to the porch, wall, windows and the guard post.
State police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanapi said yesterday that there are no leads into the cases and investigations are still ongoing. – February 16, 2014.
