Our National Anthem's origins can be traced back to "La Rosalie", a melody written by french composer Pierre-Jean de BĂ©ranger.
The original melody was a popular tune in the late 19th century, especially on the island of Seychelles where the Sultan of Perak was living in exile. He adopted the tune for his state anthem which was later titled "Allah Lanjutkan Usia Sultan".
In 1957, a competition was organized for the purpose of choosing a suitable national anthem for Malaya. 514 entries were received from all over the world though none were deemed suitable.
The Committee then turned to the Perak State Anthem. On 5 August 1957, it was selected on account of the "traditional flavour" of its melody. New lyrics for the national anthem were written jointly by the committee — with the Tunku himself playing the leading role.
