06th AUGUST 2022 LATE POST FOR HIROSHIMA

(Late Post - baru ada masa nak menulis)

Nik Yusof, Syed Omar & Abdul Razak

6 August 2022 - Kouzenji Temple, Itsukaichi, Hiroshima.

Memorial Service for Nik Yusof Nik Ali, a Malaysian student who died during the atomic bomb attack in Hiroshima, 77 years ago. He was only 20 years old.

Nik Yusof arrived in Tokyo in 1943 and later attended the Hiroshima University of Literature and Science, now known as Hiroshima University. He was among those selected as a member of the special Southeast Asian students to go to Japan. These students were considered to posses leadership potential and were enrolled in Japanese schools to learn about Japanese policies.

The intensity of World War 2 gradually got worse and the effects were felt by everyone, including the the foreign students in Japan. Food supply was low but there were special distributions of meat for students.

On that fateful day, August 6th at 8:15 am, the first atomic bomb used in human history was dropped in the city of Hiroshima.

An estimated 140,000 lives were lost, including Nik Yusof and his friend, Syed Omar Al Sagoff. Nik Yusof succumbed to his injuries and died the next day. Syed Omar left Hiroshima for Tokyo, but he got sick and was hospitalized in Kyoto. Though many people helped to nurse him, he died on September 3, 1945. He is buried in Enko-ji in Kyoto.

The only known Malaysian survivor of the atomic bomb attack is, Abdul Razak. Abdul Razak is the late father of Tan Sri Dzulkifki Abdul Razak, the current rector of International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).

Every year, Hiroshima University invites current Malaysian students at Hiroshima University to attend the Memorial Service for Nik Yusof. This memorial service is organized by the priest of Kenzouji temple along with Japanese and Malaysian volunteers.

I try to attend this Memorial Service every year to pay my respects. It is a painful reminder of the detriments of war and innocent lives lost.
